Ganpati Modak and Mithai for Ganpati
Every year, we eagerly wait for the festival of Ganpati, a time that brings heaps of happiness and togetherness into our lives. This festival lights up our city with twinkling lights and the air smells absolutely divine. Everywhere you go, you're greeted by the sweet smell of fresh flowers, calming incense, and the delicious aroma of jaggery.
But what truly warms our hearts is the special treat that comes with Ganpati—the Modak! Among all the tasty offerings like Motichur Laddus, Karanjis, Puranpoli, and Sheera, the Modak is like the ultimate superstar.
What makes the Modak extra special? It only shows up during Ganpati! It's a small, dome-shaped sweet that's so yummy, you might lose count of how many you've gobbled! We all have fond memories of eagerly waiting for the day's rituals to finish, just so we can open the little box and savor those delightful Modaks. It's a moment filled with excitement and love that warms our hearts every year.
Traditionally there are two types of Modaks, Mawa Modaks and Steamed Modaks. The Modaks made with mawa are essentially evaporated milk solids made by reducing milk with sugar by slow-cooking it. This mawa or khoya is then flavoured with saffron and cardamom and shaped in a Modak mould. While that is the most traditional preparation of a Mawa Modak, nowadays you get a plethora of flavours to please the Lord and gift your loved ones. From Chocolate and Mango to Dry fruits and even stuffed Modaks, the list is endless. During this time of the year, the glass displays of sweet shops are in fact the look-alike of nothing less than a rainbow, filled with trays of multiple colours and flavours! The other Modak is the steamed Modak. This Modak has different names across India but in Maharashtra, it is called Ukadiche Modak. Made with freshly ground rice flour, these Modaks are filled with a mix of jaggery and coconut, wrapped in turmeric leaves and steamed. This Modak is in fact quite a traditional offering to Lord Ganesh.
Another one of Lord Ganesh’s favourites is Laddus! Although available throughout the year, they are commonly presented to him as an offering as well as given to guests and family that visit you.
At Bombay Sweet Shop, we love our sweet traditions. This year for Ganpati season, we are making sure you have everything you need to make your celebrations extra festive and delicious. Our mithai magicians have stirred up three unique Mawa Modak, three special Bappa’s Laddus and even curated a special Bappa’s Mithai Hamper!
